Hold me Darling for tonight
Love me while the time is right
Leave now and I'll dream of you tonight

But Remember Darling, be gone by dawn
You must be gone by dawn
Together Darling, we must never be found
You must be gone by dawn

And I can't get you out of my head
I can't get you out of my head
Suddenly I think of you instead
I can't get you out of my head

Hold me, Darling, one more time,
Let me sleep in your delight
Kiss me now before you take your flight

And flee you must, it's sad, it's true
'Cause if we're found we'll both be ruined
Go now while there's no more time to lose!

And Remember Darling, be gone by dawn
You must be gone by dawn
Together Darling, we will never belong
You must be gone by dawn

And I can't get you out of my head
I can't get you out of my head
Suddenly I think of you instead
I can't get you out of my head

Story of the Song

1978:  I was friends with Frank and Alicia, the Episcopal minister and his wife, in Sutter Creek, CA. They were a lively, fun-loving couple, and my friends Chris and Dean and I spent a lot of time at their house.

Their daughter Martha, a divorced twenty-something, was in from Texas, visiting her mom and dad, who were about to leave for the weekend; Martha would be house sitting.

Chris and Dean and I spent a day and then the evening at Frank and Alicia’s, with their daughter Martha. Let’s just say, I ended up spending the night with the preacher’s daughter. Martha and I had a short but lovely day and evening together full of laughter and singing, poetry and wine. Martha shared her favorite poem with me, titled Remember Darling.

After a beautiful evening of romance and lovemaking, we knew that this would be a brief but memorable affair. Her parents would be home the next day, and by morning, it was important that I be somewhere else. The last thing Martha said to me before we fell asleep, “Remember, Darling, be gone by dawn.” Thus, the title of this song.
